SJV School Re-Opening plan

SJV School Covid- 19 Reopening Plan Handbook Addendum

Social Distancing, Face Coverings, and Personal Hygiene

We can achieve four to six feet of spacing in our classrooms depending on class size.  Students will socially distance while in line and change classes following a one-way directional plan.  Students will also be placed in a homeroom cohort that will stay together throughout the day.

Recently the Louisiana Department of Education as well as the OLOL Hospital Team recommended that students in grades three through eight should wear face coverings, as able, to the maximum extent possible.  Most importantly, face coverings should be worn during transition times.

We will follow these guidelines and have our students in these grades wear a face covering.  Our intent in doing so is to keep all students and faculty as safe as possible.  We want to take every precaution to avoid our school becoming a hot spot that would dictate a home quarantine for multiple students and/or faculty.

Common sense and a concern for the well-being of the child also figure into our plan.  Ideally, those advising recommend that students should wear a mask when in the classroom throughout the day.  While this is a sound goal, our students will be required to wear their face covering, as able, to the maximum extent possible.

Those advising also encourage students in grades PK through second grade to wear a face covering, but this is not a requirement.

A student’s face covering may be a mask or a neck gaiter of any design or color as long as it is appropriate and not distracting.  Please purchase more than one and send a second one with your child each day so we won’t have to call a parent to bring another if it becomes soiled during the school day. Fabric face covering should be washed each day and disposable masks should only be worn for one school day.

If your child has a medical condition that requires them not to wear a mask, we will require a doctor’s order on file.  In an effort to limit exposure to both masked and excused unmasked students, some special protocols may be put into place.

If your child hasn’t had any practice wearing a face covering, you may want him/her to start practicing now to decrease any potential anxiety or sense of uncomfortableness.

Face shields and masks have been provided for our faculty and staff.  It has been recommended that faculty wear the face shield when instructing in the front of the class and add a face covering when working one on one with a child.

As shown in the chart, some students will switch classes.  We can do this safely as desks, chairs, and high touch surfaces will be sanitized with a child-safe, approved cleaner that has a three-minute kill time and a three-minute dry time.  The teacher will clean these surfaces while students line up socially distanced to move to the next class.  Students will be seated in the same seating chart in each classroom.  Students will use hand sanitizer each time they enter a classroom.  Bathrooms will be cleaned frequently throughout the day.

Students who do not change classes will clean their hands at least every two hours.

Personal Health Check & Temperature Taking
Prior to arrival, parents should complete a personal health assessment of their child (one has been attached for your convenience) including taking their temperature.  Sending your child to school is your confirmation that your child is in good health.  Each child will have his/her temperature checked before exiting the vehicle at carpool in phase two.  A student with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher will not be allowed to enter to campus.

Faculty & staff will also assess their health and check their temperature daily.

The first aid station has been temporarily moved out of the school office to the front of the campus in the gym meeting rooms.  This space will enable Nurse Annie Fabre to separate a child who has fever from one who does not.  A student with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher should be picked up from the first aid station within thirty minutes.  If you need to add additional emergency contacts, please do so by emailing the name and contact information to Cindy Hartmann at chartmann@stjeanvianneyschool.org.

Health & Safety
  • Students and faculty will not be allowed to attend school with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher; and without the use of fever-reducing medications.
  • If a student or faculty member has a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, he/she will be required to have a doctor’s note to return to school.
  • If a student will be absent, follow our handbook protocol of contacting school by email at absent@stjeanvianneyschool.org or calling the office before 9:00 am.
  • If a student or faculty member has been in close contact with someone confirmed to have Covid-19, then they should quarantine for the physician recommended amount of time.
  • If a student or faculty member is suspected or confirmed to have Covid-19, they will quarantine, and a doctor’s note will be required to return to school.
  • Any student or faculty member testing positive for Covid-19 would quarantine for the physician recommended amount of time.
  • Students under quarantine will be given access to lessons and materials through Google Classroom and other means.  It is expected that the student continues his/her learning from home.
  • We will notify families of students who have had direct exposure to anyone testing positive for Covid-19.
  • If a teacher suspects that a child has a fever, he/she will take the child’s temperature with a touch free thermometer.
  • If the child is discovered to have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher, he/she will be sent to the first aid station.

Especially during this pandemic, please keep your child home if they have any symptoms of illness.

During phase two, any parent who enters the school office will need to be masked and screened.  Parents who need to check out their child early will need to call our school secretary, Cindy Hartmann, at 225.751.1831 so she can call your child to the office.  Parents may wait outside the school office for their child to walk out to them.  Our intent in following this protocol is to limit outside exposure to school students and faculty.

Arrival & Dismissal
At this time, we understand that we will not have access to EBPSS busses so families will need to carpool or register for extended care.  We will follow our typical carpool path.  I have attached a map for your review.  We ask for your patience and flexibility as carpool procedures frequently take some extra time as the school year starts but are usually flowing smoothly by Labor Day.

As always, we will handle carpool in a safe and efficient way.  In the morning, it helps the line move quicker if your child is ready to exit the car when you reach the duty teacher.  Share words of wisdom and sweet goodbyes as you move toward the duty teacher, so your child is ready be temperature checked and can hop out in a timely manner with his/her belongings.

Students in grades three through eight should exit the car with a face covering.

At afternoon dismissal, you can help expedite this carpool procedure by using your carpool sign.  Showing your sign allows the duty teacher to confirm that the driver is permitted to pick up the child and allows the line to move quicker.  It is important that you have your sign at each and every carpool.  After all carpool signs are distributed, cars without signs will be directed to pick their child up at the school office so we can verify the identity of the person picking up the child. It is very important that you are here by 3:00 each day to collect your son or daughter.

Please note that due to Early Learning & Growth now running a carpool, cars in our younger child carpool will stop in front of the parish hall until 2:30 pm each afternoon.  At 2:30, the cones will be removed, and cars may continue their route to park in the front of the gym.

Extended Care
In keeping with increased sanitization protocol, we ask that at this time each extended care student bring his/her own individually wrapped snack. We were advised by the OLOL Hospital Team that extended care cohorts could have a different composition than those used during the instructional school day.

Technology, Google Classroom & Distance Learning
SJV School believes in enhancing our student’s learning through the use of educational technology.  We are committed to preparing them for their high school experience and an increasingly technical world. I’m excited to share that this summer our faculty attended Google Classroom training as well as Methods of On-Line Learning professional development webinars offered by the Catholic Schools Office.

For this school year, we will have a Chromebook and protective bag for each of our middle school and junior high students.  We are currently waiting on our last shipment.  Each middle school and junior high student will carry this assigned laptop with them throughout the day and parents of these students should look for a Chromebook Handbook to come with your child on the first day of school.

Students in grades two through eight will be taught how to use Google Classroom with middle school and junior high using it frequently to access and submit assignments.

Recently, our school was able to utilize a grant which will enable us to give a Chromebook to each student in grades second through fourth as well.  While we wait for the request to be granted, we have two carts of Fujitsu laptops (previously used- gifted to us from SMHS) that will be cleaned and rotate between the first through fourth grades.  This will allow students in these grades to become familiar with Google Classroom.

In the event that we slide back into phase one at any point during the year, our plan is to send Chromebooks home with students in grades two through eight so that they can continue meaningful learning with recorded teacher instruction in Google Classroom.

Students in grades PK through first will be introduced to age appropriate uses of technology in the classroom.  These students will also be assigned Google Classroom accounts so that parents can access teacher recorded instruction and materials in the event the state returns to phase one.

School Mass on Friday
While we may not have the ability to attend Mass together in all phases, our dedicated pastor, Fr. Tom Ranzino, will allow Holy Communion to be offered to students in their classrooms in grades three through eight.  He and other Extraordinary Ministers will visit each homeroom following our school community virtually viewing Mass to offer students the Body of Christ.  Students of other faiths will receive a blessing at this time.

School Library & Accelerated Reader
In phase two, we will be spreading out our PK and kindergarten classes by utilizing different spaces- one of which is the library.  Class visits to the library will be suspended during this time thus making Accelerated Reader not possible during phase two.  Summer AR assignments will still be counted as a grade for the first nine weeks.  Classroom libraries, however, may be available to your student.

You will also be able to find the contents of this document and chart in the SJV School Student & Faculty Handbook.

Diocese of Baton Rouge Covid-19 Consent Form and Liability Waiver
Please find the attached consent form and liability waiver.  It is imperative that we have one completed from each family.  We will be collecting these at Hi(s) and Supplies and on the first day of school.  A student may not attend school without this waiver completed and submitted.

SJV School Covid-19 Illness Policy
Following recommendations from the CDC, OLOL Medical Consultants, and our local Department of Health, the following illness policy was developed by school nurses in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. Our schools have gone to great lengths to mitigate the risks of Covid-19, but we recognize that even with these measures that any school may experience an outbreak.

Please screen your children carefully at home before school for any signs of illness and keep them home if you have any indication that they are not completely healthy. Our 24-hour rule for contagious symptoms still applies. A student may not attend school if they have had a fever over 100, vomiting, or diarrhea in the past 24 hours. This has always been our policy at SJV School.

Illness: Students will not be allowed to attend school with a temperature over 100 degrees; and without the use of fever-reducing medications.
They will be sent home or refused to enter the school if their temperature is 100 degrees or greater and will not be allowed to attend school without a written note of release from a physician.

If a student or family member (someone that they child lives) is suspected to have Covid-19, the student will remain home from school while awaiting test results.

Symptoms of Covid-19 include: fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of sense of smell or taste, headache, sore throat, muscle aches, and chills.

A positive Covid-19 test of any student or faculty member will be reported to the Regional Medical Director. The RMD will advise on quarantining and school closure. We anticipate a quarantine of 14 days for any direct, sustained exposure to positive Covid-19 cases.

Louisiana Department of Health may also perform contact tracing of close school contacts or family members of Covid-19 positive people.

A student who has a positive test for Covid-19 are required to meet ALL FIVE of the following criteria before returning to school:
1. The student must be fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine.
2. They must have improved symptoms, including, but not limited to: cough, fatigue, loss of sense of smell or taste, headache, sore throat, and muscle aches.
3. They must be at least 10 days past the date of the positive Covid-19 test.  Proof of test will be required.
4. The student must be able to participate in a full day of school.
5. They must have a written release to return to school from their physician.

The physician’s note may not override the above criteria.

Picking up a sick child from school:
If a student becomes ill during the school day, they will be sent to the first aid station where they will be assessed.
They will be required to wear a mask, including PK through 2nd grade, and be isolated from others until someone can pick them up from school.
It is our expectation that a child will be picked up within 30 minutes by a parent or emergency contact after being called by the nurse.
It will be required that the student will need to be cleared by a physician before returning to school.

Please notify the school nurse, Annie Fabre, RN (afabre@stjeanvianneyschool.org) if your child:
1. Is absent due to developing Covid-19 symptoms.
2. Is diagnosed with Covid-19.
3. Is waiting on Covid-19 test results.
4. Has had close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid-19.
5. Has a family member, living in the same household, who has been diagnosed or tested positive for Covid-19.

Due to the ever-evolving nature of this illness we will continue to assess our policies and make the appropriate changes in an effort to maintain the safest environment possible.
